Verification Status Terms

Data submitted to the NBN Atlas require information on the identification verification status of each occurrence record. Optionally, the data provider can supply details on the georeference verification of records as well. The NBN Atlas has two verification levels, however, only the identification verification status of the first level is required for data submission.

Verification status 1

For each record, the NBN Atlas requires:

identificationVerificationStatus: the extent to which the taxonomic identification has been verified to be correct.

Optionally, the data provider can supply:

georeferenceVerificationStatus: the extent to which the capture resolution georeference has been verified to represent the best possible spatial description. The resolution on the NBN Atlas may be at a lower resolution than the capture resolution.

The options are Accepted or Unconfirmed.

Accepted The record is accepted as meeting the standard required for inclusion by the recording scheme or project in question
Unconfirmed The record is in the system but has either not been looked at, or a verification decision not yet been reached (Default)

Verification status 2

In addition, data providers can provide a more detailed verification status for each record using identificationVerificationStatus2 and georeferenceVerificationStatus2. This information is not essential for the upload of data to the NBN Atlas.

identificationVerificationStatus2 is an extended description of the extent to which the taxonomic identification has been verified to be correct.

georeferenceVerificationStatus2 is an extended description of the extent to which the capture resolution georeference has been verified to represent the best possible spatial description. The resolution on the NBN Atlas may be at a lower resolution than the capture resolution.

The options are: Correct, ConsideredCorrect, Plausible or NotReviewed.

Accepted Correct The verifier is able to confirm that the species has been identified correctly
ConsideredCorrect The verifier has not seen photo/s or specimen/s, but has a high degree of confidence that the record is likely to be correct, based on difficulty of ID, date, location and recorder skills/experience etc.
Unconfirmed Plausible The record is plausible based on species, date and location, but there is not enough supporting evidence for the possibility of misidentification to be ruled out. This is not considered as an Accepted record (and would not be exported to the NBN Atlas for those schemes that link directly to NBN). This can be a good option for ensuring that unconfirmed records from inexperienced recorders can be dealt with without putting the recorder off by giving an outright rejection
NotReviewed The record is in the system, but has either not been looked at, or a verification decision not yet been reached
